The sequences in which Julia Stiles and her body double do ballet – and especially when they perform the climactic ballet-hip hop hybrid final number – are a reminder that while it can be hard to cast actors who can really dance (or dancers who can really act), it’s usually worth it.Īs for the racial politics of the movie – suburban white girl moves to Chicago to live with her father when her mother dies, goes to a majority Black high school where students have criminal records and kids, falls for the college-bound Black boy who teaches her hip hop, and is relieved of the comforting colorblind fantasy that there’s “only one world” – it’s not so much that they’ve aged badly. Unfortunately, for lovers of dance, Save the Last Dance’s dance sequences themselves leave a lot to be desired: the hip hop club scenes are given short shrift, as are the moments in which the lead characters go to the Joffrey Ballet to watch a professional performance. ![]() A dramatic final number performed in front of snooty gatekeepers? Of course. Bleeding toes mangled by hours spent dancing in pointe shoes? Obviously. It also has a lot of what you’d expect to find in a dance movie, especially one about a ballet dancer. A 23-year-old Kerry Washington in one of her first adult roles, radiating the kind of charisma and power that will one day convince Pope Associates to kill and die for her? Damn right. This alleviates one of my few complaints of the original Nemesis in that noise tokens quickly became overwhelming, leaving characters stuck with no chance of escape. In Lockdown, noise tokens are removed from corridors in any powered section where there is not currently a character in a connecting room. This can affect other game systems such as noise. Speaking of power, this is another new element in Lockdown, as the base is on emergency power, there isn’t enough to run the entire facility at once, so power will often need to be redistributed to the relevant sections. The facility is also multi level, which means player will have to ascend or descend depending on their need, this can be done by using the stairs, which are always considered to be in darkness, which becomes important in regard to noise or the elevator, which, unless you’re the janitor character, requires power to function. I like to think that Nemesis Lockdown is to James Cameron’s Aliens what the original Nemesis was to Ridley Scott’s Alien, the action has now moved from a claustrophobic ship in deep space, to an overrun civilian facility on a hostile planet. In Nemesis Lockdown, events follow the original game with a new group of characters on a Mars installation, where, following contact with survivors of the original Nemesis crew, a new breed of alien horrors now lurk in the dark and unnecessarily steam filled corridors of this isolated facility. Players take on the roles of crew members abruptly awakened from hibernation to face ship full of corporate deceptions, system malfunctions and unknown horrors, which are often also in the form of corporate deceptions. ![]() ![]() For those who are unfamiliar, Nemesis is a semi-cooperative survival horror game set aboard the titular space faring vessel. (Yeah, I know, BoardGameGeek says its a 2018 title, but this is a crowdfunded game we’re talking about here and since it didn’t reach most gamers hands until 2020, I’m going with that). Nemesis Lockdown is a stand alone sequel to the original Nemesis game released back in 2020. ![]() Bonus CT Money collected from online orders will be applied to the member’s Triangle Rewards™ account within 5 weeks of the purchase date.
